Commonly Asked Questions About 4-H:
What is a 4-H Project?
A project is a topic or set of related goals that a 4-H member commits to learning and working on during their 4-H year. Members must select at least one project per year, but may choose to do multiple projects. Some of the most popular projects offered by 4-H Saskatchewan are Beef, Light Horse, Archery, and Outdoor Adventure. We also offer a 4-U project option, which allows members to customize their own project!
What is a Project Animal?
For projects that involve raising an animal, a Project Animal is selected by the member. The animal designated as a Project Animal will be the animal that the member focuses the most on for that 4-H year. 4-H members take their Project Animal to shows, write about their Project Animal in their Record Books , and show their project Animal at their club Achievement Day at the end of the year. Not all projects require a project animal. For some projects, it is possible to loan or borrow an animal, especially when new to 4-H. |

How do I become involved with 4-H?
4-H is a club-based program, which means that all members must be registered with a club. There are 4-H clubs active all across Saskatchewan. Because the 4-H year runs from September 1st-August 31st, most clubs accept new members in the fall. If you are interested in joining a club near you, or are curious about starting your own club, please contact the provincial office at 306-933-7727.
4-H also welcomes any volunteers, 18 years or older, who are willing to share their time and enthusiasm as a 4-H leader. Leader help teach members their project skills, organize events, and assist the members running the club meetings. To be a leader, you do not have to be an expert! However, all leaders must agree to undergo a volunteer screening process.

Is 4-H only about agriculture? Can we join 4-H as an urban family?
4-H has very strong roots in the agricultural industry, and many of our clubs are based in rural areas. 4-H programming also contains a lot of agriculture-based education, which is valuable no matter where you live.
However, for families living in the city, there is still plenty of opportunity to engage with 4-H! Many of our projects are designed to be accessible for urban members, such as Car Care, Small Pets, Sewing, Gardening, and more! No 4-H programs are limited to only rural residents, and 4-H is working to better service urban families. Cities with especially strong 4-H presences include Prince Albert, North Battleford, Saskatoon, and Regina.
If you are interested in joining 4-H but not sure if there are clubs near your city, contact the provincial 4-H office at 306-933-7727 and we will do our best to connect you with a club! If there turns out to be no clubs near you, consider starting your own club! We have many helpful resources available for new clubs.
